How we install a Bose subwoofer in the floor!

At Simply Wired, we strongly see the value in the Bose systems we install often for our customers. Gone is the huge 24" x 24" subwoofer that can look like a table, and enter a nifty idea from the geniuses at Bose.

All Bose Invisibuilt systems ( not available at circuit city, best buy, or any other store) have the option of utilizing the acoustimass invisibuilt subwoofer. This subwoofer can be installed in your floor, even a pre existing hardwood floor! Heres a few pics of the install, look for the finished result in a later posting.

How to install a flatscreen...

ok ok. why are we telling you how to do this? We hope that by showing you th complexity of what we do you will understand the value in our service. Hanging a flatscreen is NOT like hanging a picture. Although it would be a pretty funny you tube video, your brand new 52" screen crashing off the wall would probably NOT sit well with your better half!!

Challenges- you can guess, but you really dont know where those studs are to mount to.

Solution-Simply Wired has advanced tools to do this!

Before you tackle wall mounting a LCD or plasma, you need to ask yourself one question. Is this something best left to a professional installer? If you’re not sure then the answer is yes. I’m not implying that self installation is for everyone.
If you doubt your abilities then by all means it’s worth hiring a professional.

Picking the right location:
Choosing the right place (read wall) to wall mount your LCD or Plasma in my opinion is directly proportional to the difficulty you’ll experience. Exterior walls typically offer more obstructions than interior walls, and if at all possible (especially if you’ve never done this) I recommend using interior walls.
Exterior walls, depending on the region you live in, may (or may not) be built with sway-braces which are sometimes called fire-blocks; although true fire-blocks are typically only found in commercial structures. These blocks are generally found about mid ways up the wall from the floor, and greatly increase the difficulty of passing the wiring from your equipment up to the display.
Note: choosing an interior wall doesn’t 100% rule out any obstruction in the wall but I have a recommendation for checking this as well, more on that later.
Preparation:
First make sure that your chosen LCD or plasma is even capable of being wall-mounted. It’s rare but there are some early models that were table-top only. The easiest way to check this is to see if the box or owners manual mentions ‘VESA Compatible’ or just the words VESA mount. VESA stands for “Video Electronics Standards Association” and is just another way of saying this display is designed to work with VESA standard mounts.
If you don’t see any mention of this, all isn’t lost. Just look at the back of the display and check to see if it has four (or more) threaded screw inserts that a mount can be affixed to. If so, you’re good to go.
From there you’ll need to select a mount that’s appropriate for your display. Wall mounts come in a wide range of sizes and styles. For brevity’s sake I’ll just mention the ones I prefer but by all means shop around for what best suits your application.
We pretty much stick with two brands of display mounts, namely OmniMount and Peerless. For LCD’s 37” and under I typically go for the OmniMount and switch-off to Peerless only when I need to mount something heavier than the average 42” Plasma.

Tilting mounts allow you to tilt the display down slightly, this is a nice feature and one I recommend opting for if possible.
Tools Needed:
Most flat panel displays can be wall-mounted with tools you likely already own, that is if you own basic hand-tools (tape measure, screwdrivers, a socket set, cordless drill etc). One item you might not own, that can come in handy for pinpointing the exact location for the mount, is a stud finder (about $20 at Home Depot or Lowe’s).
Recommended tools: Tape Measure, Socket set, Torpedo Level, Sheetrock Saw*, Electrical Tape, Stud-Finder, Philips Screw Driver and of course the LCD/Plasma and wall mount, as well as the proper cabling.
First Steps:
You’ll need to determine the horizontal placement of the mount on your wall. Once you have a rough idea where you want to place the display (left to right) you’ll need to check for obstructions below the mount down to where your power cable and video feeds will exit the wall, and ultimately make their way to your source equipment. This is where the stud finder comes in handy.
Also in the above step, locate the wall-studs as they relate in position to your bracket. At the very minimum you’ll want to ensure your penetrating into at least one wall-stud (with two anchor bolts, top & bottom) if your mounting a LCD. If you’re mounting a plasma, you’ll want to hit two studs with two anchors bolts on each side, i.e. a total of four anchors.
Note: While it is acceptable to bear the weight of a small to medium sized LCD on one stud, that doesn’t mean you can leave the opposite side loose or free. You’ll still need to toggle or anchor the opposite side, most wall-mount kits come with the necessary hardware for this.
About screen height: As you can see in the photo links at the top of the page, this particular screen is positioned somewhat high on the wall, something I try to avoid if at all possible. Our reasoning for placing this LCD high on the wall was the four poster bed in this room, any lower and the view would have been obstructed by the lower left bed post.
A quick note about the aforementioned power cable: There are several methods of getting power to your wall mounted display but not all of them are condoned by the National Electric Code. The preferred method is to employ standard ‘romex’ electrical cable terminated inside a receptacle.
This article is geared toward do-it your-self minded individuals with at least a precursory knowledge of home electrical systems. Please use discretion and by all means consult an electrician if in doubt.
Installing the Mount:
Before you begin mounting the bracket to the wall, you’ll want to attach the mounting rails to the back of your display. I like to do this first so I can get a better idea of exactly where the display will sit in relation to the bracket on the wall. In other words, if the rails that affix to the rear of the display shift the overall height of the display up by two inches, you’ll need to factor this into where you mount the wall bracket.
Once this is done you’re almost ready to install the mount to the wall. Grab a pencil and make some light marks on the wall, where the anchor bolts will go through the mount and also trace out a pattern where your wall-box (for cabling) will be cut.
Then put the mount aside for a minute. You’ll want to tap or pre-start a pilot hole for your anchor bolts as they can be difficult to start on their own. You can use a cordless drill with small diameter bit for this or by driving in a sheetrock screw and then removing it.
Go ahead and cut-out and install your wall-boxes for the cabling, both at the display location and wherever you want the audio/video cables to interface with your A/V system. This is where the recommended sheetrock saw comes into play but you could probably improvise here with a box-cutter.
If you’re exiting the cables directly below the display (at electrical box height), the actual pulling of the cables will be much easier than if you’re trying to reach another location in the room, by going into the crawlspace or basement and back up into the room.
If the wall your installing the display on is insulated you might find it difficult to get the cables from the wall-box behind the mount down to the box near your equipment. We use a fish for these types of wire pulls, but you could probably substitute two straightened coat hangers, taped together for this as well.
Ok, with your wall-boxes in place and cabling ran you’re ready to attach the mount to the wall. Hold the mount up to the wall and with your torpedo level ensure that its level and in your desired position.
With a socket-wrench secure your first anchor; this may take a bit a pressure to get the bolt started depending on how well you tapped your pilot hole. Move onto the second bolt, third, fourth and give them all a good last twist to ensure they’re snug and you’re ready to hang the display.
As you can see in the photo above, we chose to exit our cables above the mount. We typically exit the cables in the large open rectangular area in the center of the mount, but as this particular LCD’s inputs are located toward the top-half of the display we accommodated for this with the higher cable placement.
Hanging your display:
Before you grab that display you might want to get a family member or friend to help you with this part. It’s definitely easier to hang a display with two people, one on each side than trying to wrangle it into position all by yourself, (especially if it’s a 42” Plasma, don’t try to hang something this heavy by yourself).
I also recommend taking a look at where the inputs for power and video are located on the back of the display before you lift it. It’s much easier to put the cables into their respective slots if you already know where they go.
Once the display is mounted and the cables are all in place, check to make sure the safety tabs are in position. The weight of the display itself will likely keep it secure on the mount but these tabs or “locks” that close over the rails of the mount, add the extra piece of mind you want when it comes to expensive LCD’s or Plasmas.
Final Thoughts:
So there you have it, your LCD or Plasma is wall mounted and ready to enjoy and you’ll be able to tell your friends and family ‘Yeah I installed that, it was a piece of cake’.
My goal here was to illustrate the types of things you may encounter while wall-mounting a LCD or plasma, to help you get a better idea if this is even something you want to tackle yourself.
As with any A/V project, specific applications and installation methods can give rise to unforeseen problems, but hopefully at the very least you now have a better understanding of what goes into the process.
I want to make a quick note about cabling. In my photos you’ll see that we only ran a HDMI cable. We didn’t have any component sources that were going to be used in this system, as the receiver that interfaces with this disply will handle all video switching via HDMI. In most cases however I also recommend running a set of component cables, especially if you’re in doubt as to the final system configuration.

Instead, components will beam uncompressed video and audio across the room.
TVs themselves could look quite different in 2010. They may be small and flexible enough to roll up and take with you. Or they may be enormous screens that are integrated into your home—like Panasonic’s LIFEWALL, a giant high-definition projector system that alters the images it shows—landscapes, videos, virtual windows—depending on who’s watching.
You may still need a subscription à la cable, West says, but programming will be Internet-based and “very niche-oriented.” People will subscribe only to shows that suit their interests, whether ice skating or interior design, cage fighting or sci-fi.

BLU RAY OFFICIALLY WINS FORMAT WAR...

Toshiba has officially discontinued production of HD DVD players, confirming the rumors and reports of the format’s demise since late last week.
The company held a press conference in Japan this morning, announcing that it will aim to stop shipping HD DVD products by the end of March 2008.
“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, Toshiba president and CEO.
“While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
According to Engadget, Toshiba has “no plans” to adopt Blu-ray, only supporting SD DVD for now.
With the format war officially over, Paramount and Universal—the only two major studios still supporting HD DVD—have been freed from their contracts, according to a Wall Street Journal report, as has Warner Bros., which was committed to the format until May.
A number of custom-friendly manufacturers, including Kaleidescape and Niveus, have recently joined the Blu-ray camp.
The format war hasn’t been easy on integrators, with some choosing one route or the other, hybrid players, or even high-end upconverting DVD systems. Custom shops felt the pain too, expressing hesitance in recommending either format.
But how things have changed. Just four months ago, Sony CEO Howard Stringer was calling the format war a “stalemate” after Paramount and Dreamworks were wooed to HD DVD exclusivity.
Big-box deals and manufacturer incentives couldn’t stop the impact of Warner Bros.’ decision to back Blu-ray exclusively.

TV SWITCH TO DIGITAL BROADCAST...

TV's big switch from analog to digital broadcasts will be complete in just one year, on Feb. 17, 2009, and many of us are puzzling over how the shift will affect them: Do they need a new converter box, a new TV, a antenna? But it's pretty clear which business interests stand to gain.
Cable and satellite TV companies could see a wave of new subscribers as people with older TVs pass on hooking up converter boxes to older televisions or buying new sets. Local stations are already using some of the extra capacity digital broadcasting frees up by launching auxiliary TV channels with numerous weather and traffic reports, and they're looking for ways to bring programming to portable devices.
The Federal Communications Commission began the switch many years ago to free up a large chunk of U.S. airwaves, which the government is in the process of auctioning off, a process that will net billions of dollars for public coffers. Making all UHF broadcast spectrum above channel 52 available will allow for powerful new wireless services, and possibly for a new network for public safety officials to use during disasters.
Most U.S. TV stations already broadcast digital signals as well as analog. What's happening a year from Sunday is they'll switch off the analog signals. No one with cable or satellite service will be affected, nor will anyone who gets stations over the air with a newer TV with a digital tuner.
Those who will be affected are the 13 million or so households that get TV broadcasts exclusively over the air and have a TV more than a few years old _ or even a newer TV that's relatively small. Also affected are TVs not connected to cable, even if a home has cable.
A Nielsen Co. study released Friday found that 16.8 percent of all U.S. households have at least one analog television set that would not work following the switch. And Hispanics are nearly twice as likely as whites to be without TV reception.
Affected households can get a digital converter box, buy a new television or sign up for cable or satellite service or one of the newer cable-like services being offered by phone companies.
A government program said Friday that it will begin sending out coupons Tuesday worth $40 each to any U.S. household that requests them to subsidize buying a box. Each household is entitled to two coupons for the boxes, which are just coming into stores now, start at $40 or $50, making this option easy and practically free. The government says it has funds for 33 million coupons. To get one, go to http://www.dtv2009.gov. or call 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).
All TVs being sold today have digital tuners, which are sometimes called ATSC tuners, after the technical standard used to make them (the analog standard was known as NTSC). If your current TV is less than a year old, the initials "DTV" appear somewhere on its front, or its screen is rectangular, you're probably OK. If you still have the owner's manual, check there whether the tuner is digital.
The new signal could mean the picture on some televisions will improve, but it doesn't guarantee high-definition visuals. That depends on whether a particular TV is set up to receive high-definition programming and whether a program is broadcast that way.
The switch could give an economic boost to retailers and manufacturers, who would benefit from selling the boxes and new TVs. And cable providers could get a boost over the next year or two from consumers who sign up for new service rather than deal with the other options.
According to a report Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. released Friday, an estimated 1.4 million households will likely switch to pay TV service as a result of the digital TV transition _ enough to significantly lift the growth rates for the cable industry in 2009, compared to recent years.
Chris Murray, senior counsel for Consumers Union, says his organization is watching that pay TV operators don't take advantage of confusion over the digital transition to push people into buying cable to view digital TV broadcasts. It isn't necessary.
So far he hasn't seen any abusive behavior, but he said: "We want the folks in the marketplace to know that we're watching."
Brian Dietz, a spokesman for the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, a cable TV industry group, notes that cable's educational ads about the transition don't say consumers have to switch to cable.
For retailers, Bernstein analysts say the economic boost is likely to be incremental. The market for the converter boxes is likely to be about $1.4 billion, and for new TVs about $1.7 billion, for a total of $3.1 billion _ still a relatively tiny part of the $150 billion U.S. consumer electronics market.
The cost to broadcasters of new digital equipment is relatively small. Tim Thorsteinson, president of the broadcast division of Harris Corp., a major manufacturer of broadcasting equipment, says it costs about $500,000 to upgrade a typical TV station.
The transition comes at a tough point for local TV stations, however, because they are seeing live viewership erode amid a proliferation of ways to watch video _ over the Internet, on iPods and DVDs.
Mark Aitken, director of advanced technology at Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., a major broadcaster based near Baltimore, says digital technology gives TV owners several important ways to hold onto viewers, mainly high-definition broadcasts, which can be a lot more pleasant to watch than YouTube videos.
Aitken calls using HDTV broadcasts the "low-hanging fruit" for TV stations to take advantage of. He points to another big possibility: sending live TV broadcasts to portable devices like cell phones. Adapting the handsets would be simple technically; the far bigger issue is getting broadcasters, programmers, mobile device makers to agree on a standard.
Just next week, a preliminary field trial for three competing technologies for portable TV viewing is getting under way in San Francisco, Aitken said. The industry could have a candidate for the a new mobile TV standard in place by the third or fourth quarter of this year.

HD DVD MAY BE KNOCKED OUT... OUCH

Toshiba is planning to abandon HD DVD in the next few weeks, according to a story in the Hollywood Reporter, which cites “reliable industry sources.”
The Hollywood Reporter quotes Toshiba’s Jodi Sally as saying that recent developments are shifting the company’s outlook.
“Given the market developments in the past month,” she is reported as saying, “Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players.”
The story also quotes an HD DVD source saying the move could come soon. “An announcement is coming soon,” the source is reported as saying. “It could be a matter of weeks.”
Toshiba isn’t commenting on the story, calling it “rumors and speculation.” So please, take it with a grain of salt until any official announcement is made.
Just this week, Netflix and Best Buy both announced that they will be supporting Blu-ray.
At CES, Toshiba said they were committed to HD DVD despite Warner Bros.’ decision to release its discs solely on Blu-ray starting this May.
Since the January event, both sides have announced incentives for buying hardware and software, with Toshiba cutting prices of players significantly.

NETFLIX TAKING SIDES WITH BLU RAY

The popular online video rental service Netflix has announced that they have decided to support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie rentals. Pointing to the Warner Brothers exclusivity announcement as the main reason for the shift, Netflix will no longer purchase movies in the rival HD DVD format, and once the life cycle for those discs has ended, they will no longer stock the format for rent.

The view in Nazareth Pa is getting better by the moment with some high- definition Panasonic action! This is not your average flatscreen installation, as it required specialty diamond bits to drill the granite, and lots of attention to detail to get it even this far. The project is about half done, but we figured we would bring you up to speed so when the final pictures post you may be able to appreciate the process!
